What is Contour???
Using techniques to highlight and contour our faces adds dimension, reduces shadows where we don't want them, and can create angles where there are none... but what is it and how do we do contour right? As a makeup artist and esthetician, I spend a lot of my free time learning about new techniques and product formulations. I practice and master techniques on myself, and I demonstrate and teach clients how to recreate these looks. Makeup artistry is not about how much product we use or what types of products, but rather where we place those products on the face to get the desired result. You cannot master a technique without practice. Learning new techniques and working with new products should be fun. Makeup is a creative medium unlike any other!
A good rule of thumb when selecting a range of colors to use as highlight and contour is to take into consideration the condition of your skin as well as the outcome you're looking to create. Younger and more firm skin can handle powder formulations, while more mature skin benefits from hydrating cream formulas. This is not a hard and fast rule, but rather something that experience has taught me. Color selection will always be based on skin tone.
Contouring the face should be easy and can be incorporated into any 5 minute makeup routine. We add highlight/lighter colors over fine lines and wrinkles to pull them forward, creating plumper and fuller looking skin. We add depth and darkness with a contour color to add depth at the hairline. We place contour above the cheekbones to create a lifted look and we place contour strategically under the jawline and on the neck to create a chiseled look. Blush can be seamlessly blended in to achieve a sun kissed finish.
I promise you that once you see how easy this is, and you see the dimension that can be so easily created when you master this simple technique, you won't leave the house with one dimensional skin again.
