Foundational Must-Haves! Buy of the Week: Kathy
When I'm in my client's closets, one of the first things I look for is basic foundational pieces. To me, foundational pieces are boring to buy but, they are the most important pieces in a wardrobe. Often I see tops with ruffles or fun patterns but, no basic options. Ruffles and patterns are fun and sometimes the right choice but, they are limiting. Without the foundational pieces, we have less options in pairing the fun pieces into an winning outfits.
I think every woman's closet needs black, cream and navy foundational shell top options. I prefer sleeveless because I wear suit coats often and I like the flexibility of less fabric on my arms. But, there are plenty of long sleeve foundational tops, too.
This sleeveless shell top from Ann Taylor has a polished front with a jersey back, which makes it very comfortable. It comes in four colors.
Last week while shopping with Katie, she put this cream long sleeve blouse on and it went with almost everything she was trying on for her work attire. We knew this blouse was a must-have piece.
TIP: With crew neck and scoop neck tops, often I suggest adding a long necklace to create the visual line of a V-neck top. Everything we wear creates horizontal lines and when we add a pendant necklace to a crew neck or scoop neck top, it draws the flow of the outfit downward (which we want) and creates that illusion of a V-neck; this is elongating.
So, as you get that itch to clean your closet, take notice to whether or not you have basic foundational pieces to pull your outfits together.
